Chamaerops humilis' Mediterranean Fan Palm' - The Mediterranean Fan Palm is one of the most successful palms for general use in landscaping. Mediterranean Fan Palm can grow well in hot. dry, desert regions due to its high drought tolerance. This palm is unique in leaf color and shape. Leaf colors range from blue-green, to gray-green, to yellow-green, and the triangular, fan-shaped leaves are eye-catching. This palm grows at a rate of about 6 inches per year with feeding and good draining. The hardy Mediterranean Fan Palm occurs throughout the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean region at over 3,000 feet in elevation.

Palms are the universal symbol of the tropics. Palms are very important agricultural commodities in the tropics and are second only to the grasses or grains in economic importance. As landscape plants, palms are prized for their unique architecture and the intricate texture and form of their leaves and stems. Their beauty, durability, and variety rank then among the most highly valued of all landscape plants in subtropical and tropical regions. Palms are great for landscaping.

Palms are not typical trees. Instead of branching out, they grow huge leaves from a giant bud at their apex. The palm grows taller as this bud keeps producing new leaves and the lowest leaves die and fall. Next to the grasses, the palm family is most important in its usefulness to man. In some tropical countries the entire economy is based on palms, with the trees supplying food, shelter, and clothing. Worldwide, palms are an important source of food, vegetable oil, and sugar. They also provide timber, fiber, rattan cane, carnauba wax, and button ivory. We use them for everything from fuel and shampoo to the coconut seasoning of cakes and curries. Palms are planted as ornamentals for indoor and outdoor use to provide a tropical atmosphere.

May not tolerate fog?
Listen, I'm a very lazy gardener, but at least my neglect shows that this palm will need a little more TLC in coastal CA than I was willing to give. I've just replanted another one of these after my first one died after about 7 years out in the yard. Once established, I relied on just the seasonal rains (winter) to irrigate the plant. That may have been a mistake, but also I should have weeded more, or found a sunnier spot. It is foggy here in the summer, wet in the winter, and this was left in an area prone to weeds, cold sea breeze, and winter partial shade. It looked great all those years, slowly growing by a wooden fence (okay, so I have SOME suspicions about a neighbor and Roundup). Over a meter wide in bushiness, it had just dried right up into nothing when I came back after a long absence. I'll give the new one a chance in a similar area, with slightly more sun. And I'll see what happens.
