Cycas species nova, ‘Wilailak’-A fantastic new species of cycad, newly discovered, on only one Limestone Mountain in northern Thailand near Laos’ border. It not only looks great, it is cold hardy to 24º F (-4 Celsius) and has beautiful white trunk. Makes a great container plant because of slow cycad-like growth. When planted in ground will grow to 8 meters high in 40-50 years, trunk will be white and can develop 2-3 heads. Fronds are 3-4 feet long and petioles are 8-10 inches with 5-6 pair of spines. Leaflets occur in 60 or more pairs and are 12-16 inches long and 6-8 inches wide and are bluish in color. Seeds are 1-1 ½” long and 1-1 ¼” wide. Seeds are glossy green.

Cycads are as old or older than the dinosaurs...nearly 300 million years old. Thriving in the Jurassic Period, cycads dominated the landscape during the time of the dinosaurs. Excellent drainage is the most important requirement for the growth of cycads. Water must never sit around cycad roots. Cycads are gymnosperms along with pines and ginkgoes. Cycad growth is generally slow but some cycads are quick growing and can live to be hundreds of years old. Although sometimes confused with palms, cycads are much more primitive and are evolutionarily very different.
