Strelitzia is a genus of five species native to South Africa. Strelitzias are collectively known as the Birds of Paradise. Strelitzias are in the same order, Zingiberales, as bananas, gingers, and heliconias. Like their closest relatives, they are very tropical and add vibrance to any landscape. Strelitzias are a very recognizable family of plants with robust, evergreen foliage and beautiful flowers which resemble tropical birds. They enjoy large amounts of water and do best when fertilized well. Even if you do not live in a tropical region, strelitzias can easily be grown as potted plants.

The plants may be three or four years old before they bloom. When its a couple feet tall and the roots are crowding in the container, you can expect blooming to start.Special Plants are those that we think are unique and interesting. We offer them to the adventurous gardeners who would like to add more tropical interest and color to their garden or home. Stokes Tropicals has carefully chosen a wide range of exciting tropical plants that are easy-to-grow, that are not commonly available, that have some unusual horticultural interest, and can be successfully grown in containers. We are constantly searching for new and exciting plants particularly tropicals--from Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America.

White bird of paradise
I got this big gorgeous plant for my birthday this year, 2015 in February. It gets very hot as I live in a desert valley, but not in the teens like other desert cities because we are surrounded by mountains. I am very excited to get such a beautiful living plant and hope it will flower for me. It will look nice next to my swiss cheese plant.
